Biography

Isaac was born July 29, 1839 in Bedford, Tennessee to Lorenzo Cleveland Elliott and Martha Davidson. Lorenzo moved his family down to Texas sometime between 1847 and 1850. Isaac married Martha Hamilton on June 14, 1865 in Texas.

Isaac and Martha had seven known children: Robert H Elliott (1866-1899) Isaac Bluford Elliott Jr (1871-1915) Sarah Emma Princess Elliott (1878-1940) Ida Elliott (1880-1907) James Graber Elliott (1881-1958)

CIVIL WAR ESCAPE STORY This is based off of an oral history. James Earl Elliott, Isaac Blufford Sr's grandson (Isaac Bluford Jr's son) told this story to his son, Jesse James Elliott, my grandfather. (-Lucille Elliott.):

Isaac Blufford Was a confederate soldier in the 17th Tennessee Infantry. He was taken prisoner by the Union army, and wounded so badly he was placed among the dead. But of course, he wasn't dead, and was able to get up and escape. A fellow confederate prisoner joined him, and together they made their way either home or back to their respective infantries - either way, South. They received aid from sympathetic people along the way, and at some point were gifted a silver spoon. Eventually, they came to a fork (hah!) in the road. As the spoon was all they had of value, they decided to split it in half. The handle went to Isaac, and the other half went to the other soldier.

Isaac Blufford had the handle fashioned into a ring, which was handed down to his son James Earl Elliott, who handed it down to his son Jesse James Elliott, then it went to JJ's son Patrick Scott Elliott, and will go to me, Lucille Elliott, when I'm older. I've seen and held the ring, which is how I know for certain it's real, and will try to get a picture of it when I can.

    Seeking information on I B Elliott b.1838 in Shellyville,TN m. Martha Hamilton in Cass County,TX in 1865. He was a prisoner in the civil war...member of the 17th TN infantry.
    Escaped prison because a guard helped him escape..he was reported as dead. I am looking for his family in TN ...any information would be very much appreciated.

    The story as I recall it is that he was a prisoner during the war, and was wounded, and got placed among the dead bodies.  He was able to get up from there on his own, and escaped the prisoner camp.  There was one other confederate soldier who escaped with him, and the two walked back to the South.  Along the way, often people took pity on them and gave them food.  At one home, they were given a silver spoon as well, along with their meal.  When the two soldiers parted ways, on their journey home, they cut the spoon into 2 halves.  This other fellow got the end with the tines, and we don't know his name or what became of him.  The handle end is still in the family, now fashioned into a ring, and it is now in the hands of Jesse James Elliott, I believe.
