Biography

Ambrose Kirtland's first wife was named Elizabeth^[1]. Their marriage record has not been located. Her maiden name was probably Gibson, as "Ambrous son of Elizabeth Gibson", is baptized in Saybrook 2 Aug 1761^[2] and "Mr Ambrose Kirtland Junr" died 7 Jan 1784 "in the 23rd year of his age."^[3]. Their other children include^[4]:

Elizabeth died 19 Jul 1787 of consumption and is buried at Cypress Cemetery, now in Old Saybrook, Connecticut.^[1][5]

Research Notes

Elizabeth may be the daughter of Deacon John Gibson baptized 1 Jul 1728 in Voluntown, Connecticut.^[6] Deacon John died in 1759 and his will left daughter Elizabeth money for her portion^[7], suggesting she was not yet married. Dorrances witnessed John's will and one of Elizabeth's sons is named Dorrance. Voluntown is some distance from Saybrook, however, and it would be nice to find a connection between Ambrose Kirtland and Voluntown or the Gibson family and Saybrook.
