Martin Whitener was born about 1827 in Lincoln County, North Carolina.

In the 1855 Gilmer County tax digest, Martin Whitener is listed with one white poll and one school age child (son Perry M.).[3]

Martin and wife Mary have not been located on an 1870 census. They appear to be the parents of Mary Adaline Whitener who was born March 1865 in Arkansas.[5] If so, Martin was alive in July 1864 (assuming a nine-month pregnancy for the child Mary Adaline Whitener).
