Thomas (Tommy) was born in Greensboro, NC to James Willie Whitehead and Alice Elzabeth Riddle Whitehead. Attended elementary schools in West Columbia, Hartsville, Darlington, back to West Columbia, and Charleston H eights. Graduated from Airport High School in West Columbia in 1966 after skipping the 11th grade. Thomas went to work in the trucking industry for his father, James Willie (JW) after graduation. Tommy married Roberta Louise Jacks on on August 4, 1967, and shortly moved to Kissimmee, Florida. Enlisted in the US Navy Reserve in August 1968 and went on active duty in August 1969. Thomas reported aboard USS Shangri-La CVS 38 in September 1969. After attending a Navy Firefighter School and Aviation Fuels Quality Control School. Rebecca Kathleen was born on November 8, 1969.The USS Shangri-La performed Carrier Qualifications near Guantanamo, Cuba and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rica. In March 1970 the ship sailed for Subic Bay in the Philippines with a 2-day port of call in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Subic Bay was our operating port while the ship performed combat maneuvers in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam and one time anchored in the Danang Harbor to pick up repair cables for the ship's elevator. The ship visited Manila, Hong Kong, Yokosuka, Japan, Wellington, New Zealand, Sydney, Australia, the Antarctic Circle and back to Rio completing an around the world cruise. Tom was discharged from the Navy in May 1971 at Boston Naval Shipyard. Tom is a proud Vietnam Veteran. Tom continued his career in the trucking industry, working in the shop and driving. In 1973 Tom and Robin divorced after a 2-year separation. Tom and Paula were married on February 23,1973. Tom adopted Paul at the age or 6. Joseph (Joe) was born on October 4, 1976. Tom and Paula divorced in late 1980 or early 1981. Tom met Terri on her first day of employment at Consolidated Systens, Inc. on January 3, 1980. Tom and Terri were married on March 21,1981. Tom stayed in the trucking industry and became and owner/operator/driver. During this part of his career, Tom owned 26 different trucks at various times and 8 different trailers. Tom sold his last truck in 2009 and became a company driver for several trucking companies. until October 8, 2013, when he retired from driving trucks. On November3. 2013, Tom went to work for Shealy Truck Centers in Columbia, S.C. On January 12, 2022, Tom retired and now enjoys boating, hunting, shooting, riding his Harley and fishing. Tom is active in the USS Shangri-La Reunion Association and has served as Vice President, President, Secretary/ Treasurer and Chaplain. Tom is active in SC American Legion Riders and has served as Chapter Chaplain and State Chaplain. Tom is also active in the American Legi on Riders Legacy Run and has raised $10,000 for the education of the children of Fallen Heroes.
