Writer and illustrator of children's books who won two Caldecott Medals

Robert was born in 1914. He is the son of Howard McCloskey and Mabel Wismeyer. ^[1] He married Margaret Durand on 22 November 1940 in Manhattan, New York, United States.^{[2] [3]}

He both wrote and illustrated eight picture books for children. His best-known work is the story of Make Way For Ducklings, set in Boston, Massachusetts. ^[4] The book features a pair of mallards who raise their ducklings on an island in the lagoon in the Boston Public Garden. The book is the official children's book of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The book's popularity led to the construction of a statue by Nancy Schön in the Public Garden of the mother duck and her eight ducklings, which is a popular destination for children and adults alike.

He received two Caldecott Medals from the American Library Association for the year's best-illustrated picture book including one for Make Way for Ducklings.

He passed away in 2003. ^[5]
