Robert "Bob" Brunning (1943-2011)[1] was the original bass player for Fleetwood Mac.
His first band while still in grammar school was the pop outfit Lee Peterson and the Defenders. In 1963, he performed with The Sabres fronted by Tony Blackburn. In 1964, he committed to becoming a teacher in London and recorded three singles after joining Five's Company.
In July 1967, he responded to an ad in Melody Maker that read "bass player wanted for Chicago-type blues band", placed by Peter Green after he left John Mayhal's Bluesbreakers. Although he passed the audition, he knew he was only to play with the group until Green's first choice for a bass player, john McVie, because available in December 1967. Billed as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, they made their debut at the Windsor Jass and Blues Festival in August 1967.[2]
By all accounts, he had a successful teaching career. In 1978, he gained the role of head teacher at Clapham Manor Junior School.[3]
