Benjamin Collett married Sarah Cox on 6 May 1790 at Weston All Saints, Bath [1]. [2]. One of their grandsons, John Cox Newman Collett, was given his grandmother’s family name (supporting the hypothesis that it was Sarah Cox that Benjamin married).
Their banns were published on 18th April, 25 April and 2 May 1790 [3] Interestingly it appears that the banns were published in Walcot St Swithin (Benjamin was resident in the Parish of Walcot) but the marriage took place in Weston All Saints – two different churches. This is because in the Church of England, banns need to be read in the parish where each person lives as well as the church in which they are married. [4] Bath is only 10 miles from Corsham, where Benjamin was baptised.
According to his will Benjamin Collett was a brewer. His will refers to “all my horses chaises corn grain and hay stock of wine and spirituous liquors beer and all my brewing utensils”. It’s possible that he also farmed, growing his own grain, as his son Benjamin became a tenant farmer.
Benjamin Collett died in 1798 and was buried on 12 November 1798 at Corsham, Wiltshire, England[5]. His will went through probate in 1798.
