Cheryl White was an American horse racing jockey. She was the first Black female jockey and was named the Appaloosa Horse Club's Jockey of the Year four times.[1]
Cheryl White was born in Cleveland, Ohio[2] on October 29th, 1953. She was the daughter of Raymond A. White, a horse trainer and jockey, and Doris Jean Gorske.[3] She grew up in Rome, Ohio and graduated from Grand Valley High School in Orwell, Ohio.[4]
Cheryl made her professional debut as a jockey on June 15th, 1971 at the Thistledown Race Track in Cleveland, Ohio, riding her father's horse Ace Reward.[5][4] Although she came in last place in that race, she went on to have a very successful career, winning over 750 races. By 1974, she had moved to California and was especially successful racing Appaloosas in the county fair circuit. The Appaloosa Horse Club named her Jockey of the year four times (1977, 1983-1985) and she was inducted into the Appaloosa Horse Club Hall of Fame in 2011. After retiring as a jockey, she continued to work in various other roles in the horse racing industry.[2][3]
Cheryl died on September 20th, 2019. Her obituary lists one surviving brother and several nieces and nephews.[3]
