Biography

Birth and Parents

Idnerth, son of Iorwerth Hirflawdd and his wife Arianwen ferch Brychan, was an ancestor of Elystan Glodrydd. [1]

Wolcott estimates Idnerth ap Iorwerth's birth as 795. [2]

Idnerth was the son of Iorwerth Hirflawdd. [3]

Iorwerth Hirflawdd means "Iorwerth of the Long Struggle."

Pedigree: Ancestry and Descent

Wolcott estimates the birth years at 30-35 year intervals as follows for the line of descent from Teon to Elystan Glodrydd: [2]

He is identified by Boyer [4] in the pedigree of Gwaithfoed of Powys: Gwaithfoed ap Gwynnan ap Gwynnog Farefsych ap Lles Llawddeog ap Ceidio ap Corf ap Caenog ap Tegonwy ap Teon ap Gwineu Deufreuddwyd ap Brwyr Lew ap Bwydeg ap Rhun Rhudd Baladr ap Llary ap Casnar Wledig as one of Gwaithfoed of Powy's ancestors. Boyer does not provide individual descriptions of each generation, as only the name is given and it is likely that some or many are legendary. Boyer notes that the first eight generations of this pediree are the same as for the line of Trahaearn ap Caradog, with one generation difference. Gwaithfoed's pedigree appears in ahnentafel form at Legendary Ancestors of Gwaithfoed of Powys.

Research Notes

A source is needed for the chart which follows:

Elystan

Ancestry of Cuhelyn ab Ifor

Cuhelyn ab Ifor (i.e. phonetically, Kai-helin son of Ivor). Peter Bartrum in his work on Welsh genealogies confirms that Elystan’s father was Cuhelyn ab Ifor ap Severus ap Cadwr ap Cadwr Wenwyn ab Idnerth ab Iorwerth Hirflawdd (‘Iorwerth of the Long Struggle’). Iorwerth was a direct descendant of Casnar Wledig (‘The Ruler’) of Powys and was a son of Tegonwy ap Teon. Bartrum records that he is first mentioned in De Situ Brecheniauc, writing: where he is called ‘Gereuerth, King of Powys, whence are named the Iorwerthian’[5]

Is his last name at birth ap Iorwerth or ap Iowerth? If it is ap Iorwerth his father should be Iorwerth.
