Biography

Robert's birth was registered in the October-December quarter of 1874 in Madeley, Shropshire, England, with his mother's maiden surname recorded as Hammonds.^[1][2] He was baptised Robert William, the son of Edward Jones and Mary Ann Jones on 17 October 1874 in Dawley Magna, Shropshire.^[3]

In the 1881 census, Robert (age 6), Scholar, was living with his family at 183 Warrington Rd, Pemberton, Lancashire. The family also included his parents Edward (31), a coal miner, his mother, Mary (35) and his siblings Emily (13), George (9), Esther (8), and Jane (5), also all scholars, and James (3) and Leah (1 month).^[4]

In the 1891 census, Robert (age 16), now a coal miner, was still living with his parents Edward (41), a coal miner and Mary (44). The family, now in Hindley, Lancashire, also included his siblings George (19), a coal miner, Esther (17), a colliery lass, Martha Jane (15), a cotton mill winder, Leah (10), a scholar and Beatrice (4).^[5]
