Malcolm Ritchie was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

(Thomas) Malcolm Ritchie was born on 11th June 1894 in Carlton, Victoria (Australia). He was the older son of Thomas Ritchie, a tinsmith from Scotland, and Margaret Henry, a tailoress. [1] He attended the Lee Street State School and then won a scholarship to the Working Men's College, Melbourne; where he studied mechanical and electrical engineering.

He established his own (very successful) company at the age of 21, manufacturing heavy-duty electrical switchgear.

Malcolm married Phyllis Brown on 22nd April 1924 in the Presbyterian Church, Armadale, Victoria. [2][3] The couple did not have children.

He served on the New South Wales Electricity Advisory Committee from 1935 to 1946. Throughout the Second World War, from 1939 to 1945, he was state business administrator of the Department of Munitions, for which he was created Knight Bachelor in 1951.

He involved himself in community life through Rotary, the Boy Scouts' Association and the Fairbridge Farm Schools.

Malcolm chaired the provisional executive of the Liberal Party of Australia in 1945 and was subsequently chosen as the inaugural federal president.

Malcolm was a Polled Hereford breeder

Having retired, in 1962 he established a Polled Hereford stud on his property, Trelm, at Bong Bong, near Moss Vale in New South Wales' Southern Highlands.

Aged 76 years, he passed away on 22nd February 1971 at Trelm.
