Ednyfed Gam was born, say, 1270. [3]

Assaf [4] states he was born circa 1305 in Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales

Lands, Residence

Ednyfed was "of Pengwern." [2]

Ednyfed's father Iorwerth Foel was living in 1313 when Roger Mortimer, Lord of Chirk, gave lands to iorwerth Foel ab Iorwerth Fychan, son and heir of Iorwerth Hen, on the payment of twenty pounds per annum sterling; these lands were in the townships of Gwern Osbern and Pen y Clawdd, in the Lordship of Chirk. The witnesses of this grant were Ieuaf ab Adda, Lord of Trevor, Llywelyn, his son, Owain ab Fruffudd Foel; Sir Hwfa, his brother; llywelyn ab Cynwrig ab Osbern; madog ab Cynwrig Foel. [1]n y Clawdd (Clawdd Offa, or Offa's Dyke), in the Lordship of Chirk, which Iorwerth Farch hasd got for his good service to llywelyn ab Gruffudd, Lord of Nantheudwy, and Madog his brother, and praised him greatly for breaking the king's peace". [1]

The deed states, "Roger Mortimer...gave Iorwerth Farch's holding, which is called Gafael Feilfarch, the Holding of the Mailed Steed, at Pen y ab (Clawdd Offa, or Offa's Dyke), in the Lordship of Chirk, which Iorwerth Farch had got for his good service to Llywelyn ab Gruffudd, Lord of nantheudwy, and Madog his brother, and praised him greatly for breaking the king's peace."[1]

These lands were given by Iorwerth Foel to his fourth son, Edynfed Gam of llys Pengwern in Nantheudwy, and they remained a part of the Pengwern estate till Ieuan ab Adda ab iorwerth Ddu of Llys Pengwern setgtled them upon his third son Iorwerth or Edward, who was surnamed Yn Iawn, or the Just, and was the ancestor of the Edwardses of Plas Newydd and Cefu y Wern. [1]

The above named Roger Mortimer got possession of the Lordship of Chirk by grant from Edward I, dated 7th October 1282; and was imprisoned in the Tower of London in the year 1333, where he died in 1336. [1]

Gwlady's father, Iorwerth ab Gruffydd of Frongoch bore sable three horses heads erased argent and 2 argent a chev inter three rooks with ermine in their beaks sable and married Alice daughter of Hwfa ab Iorwerth ab Gruffydd ab Ieuaf ab Niniof ab Cynwrig ab Rhiwallon. [7]

He was the son of Iorwerth Foel (Bald) ab Iorwerth Fychan and Gwladys ferch Iorwerth [4]

Siblings

Ednyfed Gam's father, Iorwerth Foel and his mother Gwladys, had five sons:

  1. Madog Lloyd of Bryncunallt, who bore the arms of Tudor Trefor in a bordure gules. He married Margaret, daughter of Llewelyn ab Ieuaf ab Adda ab Awr of Trefor, by whom he was ancestor of John Wynn ab John of Bryncunallt, who married Catherine daughter of Richard ab Rhydderch ab David of Myvyrion, descended from Iarddur Lord of Llechwedd Isaf and Creuddyn, by whom he had two daughters coheirs, [7]
    1. the eldest of whom married Wynn of Tower
    2. and the second who married Richard Lloyd of Whittington died without issue. John Wynn ab John of Bryncu naullt sold that estate to Sir Edward Trevor Knight High Sheriff for Denbighshire in ad 1622. The Wynns of Eyarth and the Lloyds of Seaton Knolls descend also from Madog Lloyd.
  2. Gruffydd of Maelor Saesneg ancestor of the Lloyds of Tal y Wern and the Lloyds of the Bryn in the parish of Hanmer
  3. Morgan of Maelor Saesneg ancestor of the Yonges of Bryn Iorcyn now represented by the Con ways of Bodrhyddan and Bryn Iorcyn and the Yonges of Croxton [7]

Edneuet Gam, 4th son of Jer. Voell married Gwladis fil. Ll'n ap Madock ap Ennion. [5]

He married Gwladys verch Llewelyn[4]

Carl Boyer reports that Ednyfed Gam married Gwladus ferch llywelyn [for whom see Ednywain Bendew II* at No. 11] ap Madoc. [3] Burke adds that Ednyfed Gam married Gwladys, daughter and co-heiress of Llewelyn ap Madoc ap Einion, who was descended from Edwin, Lord of Tegaingl, and founder of the XII Noble Tribe of North Wales and Powys. [2]

Hamer gives Gwlady's ancestry, stating that

For date estimation, assume the marriage took place in about 1295.

Iorwerth Foel married Gwladys, daughter and co-heiress of Iorwerth ab Gruffudd ab Heilin of Y Fron Goch, now called Celynog in Mochnant, ab Meurig ab Ieuan ab Adda Goch of Mochnant, ab Cynwrig ab Pasgen ab Gwyn ab Gruffudd, Lord of Cegidfa and Deuddwr....the mother of Gwladys was Alice, daughter of Hwfa ab iorwerth ab Gruffudd of Bersham, ab Ieuaf ab Nyniaf ab Cynwrig ab Rhiwallawn. [1]

Gwladys, the wife of Iorwerth Foel, was buried in Hanmer Church, where her tomb yet remains with this inscription -- "HIC LACET WLADYS VXOR IERWERTH VOYL. ORATE P. EA." round the coffin lid. [1]

Ednyfed Gam married Gwladys and had six sons and a daughter. [7]:

  1. Margaret the wife of Gwilym ab Madog Lloyd [7]. Estimate her year of birth to be 1296
  2. Iorwerth Ddu, of Pengwern, eldest son. Estimate his year of birth to be 1298. He married Angharad, daughter of Adda ap Ieven ap Adda, of the Tribe of Tudor Trevor, by whom he had a son and successor, Adda ap Iorwerth Ddu of Pengwern, [2][7]
  3. David ap Ednyffed[7] born 1345. This date is questionable.
  4. Ieuan ab Ednyffed Gam, [5] born 1315, ancestor of the Joneses of Weston Rhyn in St Martin's. [7] Ieuan was the fourth son of Ednyved Gam, and so descended from Tudor Trevor. [8] Ieuan was therefore also the ancestor of the Hosier family of Shrewsbury, via Edward ap Deicws ab Howel ab Ieuan. [8][7] He married Gladys ferch Madog Fychan ap Madog Foel. [3]
  5. Meredydd ab Ednyfed Gam, fourth in descent from whom was William ab Reignallt ab David of Carreg Hwfa whose daughter and heir Margaret married Robert Lloyd of Bryngvvyn [7]
  6. Gruffyd ab Ednyfed Gam, who was ancestor of the Pughs of Ty Cerrig in Llanymyneich [7]
  7. Llewelyn of Halchdyn in Maelor Saesneg who the Harl MS 4181 states to be the eldest son of Ednyfed Gam. He married Anne daughter of Sir Roger Puleston of Emerall knight by whom he had a son Madog of Halchdyn ancestor of the Lloyds of Halchdyn.[7]

In addition to the six reporter by Hamer[7], Elen ferch Ednyfed has previously been shown as a daughter. However, she was born 1150, a century and a half before Ednyfed, and married Ynyr, b. 1101. Othe relatives lived in similar periods. Therefore she has been detached as a member of this family.

Research Notes

He appears to have been living in 1323, 1330, 1331 and 1341, when he received gifts or grants of lands in Pengwern and Branynton. He is recorded as "Ednevet ('Edn') Gam", "Ednyuet Gam vap Iowerth Voel" and "Edn' gam son of Iorwerth Voel".[9][10][11][12]

In 1330-1, he and Adda Goch ("Edeneneth Gam et Ada Gopth") were recorded as owing 100 marks to the lord of Chirkland.[13]

He was recorded as "Ednevet Cam ap Iorwerth Voel" in lease of land in Flintshire in 1342.[14]
