Biography

Darrell Wolcott ^[1] has concluded that there were three Seisyllt's and three Einions as follows:

   2. Einion I ap Seisyllt I ap Ednowain, born about 1110
      1. Seisyllt II ap Einion I, of Mewirionydd, born about 1145, married Isabel ferch Bronwen
         1. Einion II ap Seisyllt II ap Einion I, born about 1175
            1. Gronwy II ap Einion II ap Seisyllt II ap Einion I, born about 1210
      2. Gronwy I ap Einion I ap Seisyllt I ap Ednowain, born about 1145
         1. Seisyllt III ap Gronwy, born about 1175
            1. Einion III ap Seisyllt ap Gronwy, born about 1205
         2. Gwyn, born about 1180
            1. Gruffudd, born about 1215

Birth and Parents

Wolcott agrees with this pedigree offered by Bartrum for Seisyll: Seisyllt arglwydd Meirionydd ap Ednywain ap Eunydd bach. ^[2]

Bartrum believed Seisyll was born about 1170. Wolcott agrees that "the pedigree proposed is correct for this Seisyll, and his family constitutes a cousin line of the Peredur brothers both descended from Gwyddno ap Cadwaladr." However, Wolcott dates his birth as about 1080, nearly a century earlier, since his son was the first Einion ap Seisyll born c. 1110 and contemporary with Owain Cyfeiliog. ^[2]

Lands

As "arglwydd Meirionydd" he was lord of Meirionydd. Meirionydd was once a kingdom of subkingdom, but at this time functioned as a cantreff of the kingdom of Gwynedd. ^[3]

Wolcott notes that while it is likely Seisyll ap Ednowain was Lord of Ystumanner commote in Meirionydd which had its eastern border on the Dyfi river, during his lifetime the Gwynedd kings were also Lords of Meirionydd. ^[2]

Issue

Bartrum indicated that his "son, Einion, was living in the time of Llywelyn the Great. (Pen 236 p. 111 quoted RWM i.1061-2 and PF i.98-99). Einion was the ancestor of the family of Pugh of Mathafarn (see DWB) and other families in Meirionydd.

Seisyll of Meirionydd was born say 1130. He married Isabel ferch Bradwen; she was a sister of Ednywain ap Bradwen. ^[4] Children, listed by Bartrum:

2. Gruffudd
3. Llywelyn, had son Ieuan Gwynedd
4. Tegwared, perhaps a generatio or two removed, had son Gruffudd
5. Arnfel, had issue.
