Biography

Alpha Letitia Thomas was born in April 1863 in Cattaraugus, New York, United States. Her parents were William Thomas, alternately listed in the census as an oculist and a farmer, and Elizabeth CalistaHall, with whom she appeared in the 1870 census as an eight-year-old. .[1] Her father had been listed as an oculist in Cattaraugus in the previous census, but was a farmer on this census, where they lived in Blooming Prairie Township, Steele, Minnesota. William was moving his family west, and by 1880 [2] his family became pioneers in the Dakota Territory, living in Yankton (where, once again, William was an oculist).

Alpha's first marriage was to Harvey Ormiston in about 1885. Their first child, Cyrus Ormiston, was born in 1886 in Bon Homme, South Dakota. [3] Their daughter, Grace Ormiston, was born in 1892 [4] in Yankton. Harvey died in 1894 and was buried in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1900 [5] Alpha and her children lived with her nephew, Robert Ormiston (22) in Gregory, South Dakota. She claimed to have borne two children and two were living. Her occupation was "farmer." Cyrus was 14 and Grace was 9.


Alpha married her second husband,James Frank Wright in about 1904. By the time of the 1910 census, the couple lived on a farm in Cuba, Allegany, New York [6] Alpha was 47 and James was 57, and they claimed to have been married 6 years. Living with them was Alpha's daughter, Grace Ormiston (17); their own daughter, Sarah Wright, and another young woman listed as "daughter" named "Sarah Ormiston," who was 23 and born in South Dakota [Note: This Sarah Ormiston was possibly a niece through Alpha's first marriage, but was definitely not her child.] In 1930 [7] Alpha (67) and James (78) lived in Cuba, New York. In 1940, Alpha was widowed living with her daughter, Sarah Orser, and her husband, Keith in Cayuga, New York [8]


Alpha died on December 08, 1954 in Auburn, Cayuga, New York, and was buried at Cuba Cemetery in Cuba Allegany, New York[9]
