Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Indiana Napier is a part of US Black heritage.

Indiana was born into slavery, the daughter of an enslaved woman named Angeline. They were enslaved by Elias Wills Napier in Dickson County, Tennessee.

Indiana's mother was described as a "mulatto Girl" in Elias's 1848 will, which listed two of her children: Indiana and Solomon.[1][2]

Indiana's brother Solomon was emancipated in Elias's will. At the time he was six or seven years old, and was put in the care of Judah Napier, an adult woman who had also been emancipated with her children. Solomon was relocated to Ohio by 1850 and went on to serve in the Civil War as a Union soldier.

Indiana and her mother remained in slavery and were bequeathed to Elias's brother John W Napier.
