Biography

Amasa, son of Thomas Hart and Hannah Coe, was born on 19 Jun 1754 at Farmington, Hartford County, CT.[1] He died, date unknown, at Oneida County, NY, and was buried in Old Clinton Burying Ground, Clinton.[2]

He served during the Revolutionary war as private in Capt. James Stoddard's company, Col. Noadiah Hooker's regiment, Connecticut troops.[5]

On 6 Dec 1779, Amasa was chosen to collect charges in place of Samuel Lewis. He was also collector for Bristol, Hartford County, CT, on 27 Nov 1780 and 24 Dec 1784.[6]

Amasa was not found on the 1790 census of Bristol, Hartford County, CT, which listed only Amos Hart with 1 male 16+, 2 males under 16, and 2 females. Although the name and place are close, Amasa should have had 4 sons and 3 daughters in 1790.

Circa 1794, Amasa and Phebe removed to Paris (now Clinton), Oneida County, NY.[3]

The 1800 census of Deerfield, Oneida County, NY, listed Amasa Hart with 2 males 10-15 (sons William, Amasa), 2 males 16-25 (sons Abel, Jesse), 1 male 45+ (himself), 1 female 10-15 (dau Lovina), and 1 female 45+ (wife Phebe).[7]

On 27 Dec 1808, Amasa Hart of Paris in Oneida, NY, and Phebe Hart sold property to Judah Stebbins.[8]

The 1810 census of Oneida County, NY, listed A Hart with 1 male 45+ (himself) and 1 female 45+ (wife Phebe).[9]

The 1820 census of Whitestown, Oneida County, NY, listed Amasa Hart with 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 45+.[10]

Conflicting Date of Death

Find A Grave and many online trees say that Amasa died 14 Nov 1794 at Clinton, Oneida, NY, but no other source has been found. That date cannot be right because Amasa and wife Phebe Hart were named by an indenture in 1808. It's also likely they were on the 1810 and 1820 census in Oneida County, NY.
