Biography

Surrey (historic flag)
James Joy was born in Surrey, England.

James was born on 10 October 1848 the son of James Joy, a labourer, and Elizabeth Cooper at Rowledge, Surrey, England.[1] He was baptised on 5 November 1848 in St Mary, Frensham, Surrey.[2]

In the 1851 census James (age 2) was living with his parents as lodgers with Thomas and Mary Kirk in Dockenfield, Surrey, England.[3]

In 1861 James was 12, an agricultural labourer boy, living with his parents and three brothers in Dockenfield.[4]

On 3 June 1867, James was a 19-year-old bachelor living in Frensham, Surrey, as a labourer when he married a 19-year-old spinster, Mary Anne Marshall, after Banns in Frensham. Mary Anne's father was recorded as William Marshall, a labourer, and the witnesses were Charles and Charlotte Bidwell.[5][6]

In 1871, James, an agricultural labourer, and Mary, both 22, lived at Shortfield Common, Frensham, in the household of Mary's uncle, David Marshall (66), a widower and agricultural labourer. The household also included Ann Marshall, David's niece and a domestic servant.[7]

James and Mary's family, now living at Halls, Frensham, had got well underway by 1881 and included three boys: Alfred (9), James (8), and Arthur (6). Mary's uncle David, now 77, was still living with them. Both James and David were still agricultural labourers.[8]

By 1891, James, now 42 and still an agricultural labourer, was living at Spreakley, Frensham, with his family Mary and currently four sons: Alfred (19), a shepherd, Arthur (16), a Carter, Frederick (8), a scholar and Harry (2).[9] Ten years later, in 1901 James (52) was a general farm labourer living at Woodhill Cottage, Frensham. The family then comprised Mary, Alfred (30), who was still single and a labourer bricklayer, and Harry (12).[10]

In 1911, they lived at Worlham Hill, East Worldham, near Alton, Hampshire, England. The family comprised James, a farm labourer, Mary, Harry, now 24, and grandson Frederick James, 9, a scholar. By then, James and Mary had had six children, three of whom had died.[11]

James' wife Mary died on 17 June 1920 and James died soon after on 10 February 1921 aged 72, of Mitral regurgitation and syncope at Malthouse Cottages, Kingsley Rural Sanitary District, Hampshire.[12] He was buried in the parish of Worldham on 15 Feburary 1921.[13]
