I am a Greeter, and need to refer the rest of your question to admin. Meanwhile, here is good info on GEDCOMs. Your large tree will need to be separated into branches of managable size. (I've had to do the same thing with my tree). A step-by-step of the process including screenshots.
Start with 'Before you import a GEDCOM'.

It sounds like you have many people on your tree to work with! Please be aware that many persons, especially those in the 1600s and later, are already in our tree, so check for them before entering a new profile. You can add sources and biographical data to the ones already here - that is how our tree is growing so complete.
Have you read the Honor Code? I would like to confirm you as a member, so if you would kindly leave me a note regarding that I could do so immediately.
Because we are a Wiki (any member can add to profiles) we are careful with our/your family tree:)
