Archibald Hope was the second son of Sir John Hope, Lord Craighall, 2nd Baronet Hope of Craighall and Margaret Murray, daughter of Sir Archibald Murray of Blackbarony. He pursued a law career, admitted advocate 30 Jun 1664, becoming a Lord of Session as Lord Rankeillor on 1 Nov 1689. He was a Lord of Justiciary on 27 Jan 1690, and knighted soon after.
