Deliverance (Hazeltine) Dane was accused of witchcraft in the Salem Witch Trials
Deliverance Hazeltine was the daughter of Robert and Anna Hazeltine of Rowley, Massachusetts. She was born some time after May 14, 1654, when her older sister of the same name was buried. She was noted in Robert Hazeltine's will as his daughter.[1][2]
On December 12, 1672, Deliverance Hazeltine married Nathaniel Dane in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts Bay.[3][4][5]
Hannah, born Sept. 29, 1680[6], who married Samuel Osgood and James Pearson,
Daniel, born Mar. 26, 1684[6], who married Elizabeth Granger.
Mary, born February 7, 1686[8][9][10], who married Andrew Allen.
Deliverance, born February 20, 1692[11][12][13], who married Joseph Foster.
Abigail, born Dec. 27, 1698[6], who married Nathaniel Carlton.
Nathaniel Dane died on 14 Apr 1725, and his widow Deliverance Dane died June 15, 1735, at about 81 years. [14][15]. She is buried in the South Church Cemetery in Andover. [16]
Salem Witch Trials
Deliverance was one of several members of the family of (her father-in-law) Reverend Francis Dane who were involved in the Salem Witch Trials. Deliverance was arrested and questioned. She confessed and implicated Francis, though he was never arrested or tried. Unfortunately, the records of her arrest and examinations have been lost. An account of her confession was printed in 1867.[17][18]
Deliverance and her husband Nathaniel were used as characters in the fictionalized account of the trials found in Katherine Howes novel The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, though the story in the novel does not match the known details of Deliverance's life.[19]
