John Murphy was born about 1753 at Tincurry, Ferns catholic parish, Ballycarney civil parish, Co Wexford, youngest son of Thomas, farmer and bacon curer and Johanna (nee Whitty from nearby Tomgarrow) Murphy. [1]
John was ordained in June 1780 in the bishop's house, Wexford town, then to the Dominican house in Seville, Spain for studies, returned to County Wexford in Summer 1785, appointed as curate for the chapel at Boolavogue, in Monageer catholic parish.
John "was posted to the curacy of Boolavogue in the parish of Monageer, next to his home parish."
"Father John Murphy, parish priest of Kilcormick near Ferns, finding his little chapel of Boleyvogue burned by the yeomen, took the lead of the rebels, with another priest, Father Michael Murphy, whose chapel had also been burned; but although these and one or two other priests were among the insurgents of Ninety-eight, the Catholic ecclesiastical authorities were entirely opposed to the rebellion. " [2]
"Fr John Murphy and James Gallagher were flogged and hanged in the town square of Tullow, County Carlow on 2 July 1798. "
