William Óg was the third son of Richard Burgh, Lord of Connacht.
He served in France with King Henry III in 1245; and later in Scotland. [1]
He was involved in fierce feudal warfare in Ireland; William Óg de Burgh was killed in Leitrim, during the Battle of Áth-an-Chip in 1270; fighting against Aedh mac Felim Ua Conchobair, the son of Fedlimid Ó Conchobair (King of Connacht), who was trying to stop the expansion of Norman settlement in Ireland.
His son, William Liath de Burgh, became a Warden of Ireland, and married Una, daughter of the Mac Jordan of Connacht.
