Karl Wilhelm was the third, but eldest surviving son of Johann VI, Fürst (Reigning Prince) of Anhalt-Zerbst and his wife Sophie Auguste von Holstein-Gottorp and was born at Zerbst on 16/26October 1652.[1]
He succeeded on the death of his father as Fürst von Anhalt-Zerbst in 1667 under the Regency of his mother with the support of Ludwig, Landgraf von Hessen-Darmstadt and Johann Georg II, Fürst von Anhalt-Dessau.[2]
