Biography

US Black Heritage Project
George Adams is a part of US Black heritage.

George was born in 1848. He passed away in 1921.

In the 1870 census, he was a single man, classified as Black. George (age 19), was enumerated as a Farm Laborer, and was living with his parents John Adams and Eliza (Lee?) Adams in Police District 4, Madison, Mississippi.[1] In the 1880 census, George (age 30), Farm laborer, was the married head of household in Kosciusko, Attala, Mississippi, United States.[2] In the 1900 census, George (age 51), Farmer, was the married head of household in Beat 1, Attala, Mississippi. He was enumerated with his wife Harriett. They had been married 29 years; thus their year of marriage was about 1871. He was also living with daughters Nina and Pinta.[3] In the 1910 census, George (age 61), Farmer, was the married head of household in Beat 1, Attala, Mississippi, United States. He was living with his wife Harriet, his daughter Tennie and another daughter Emma and her husband.[4] In the 1920 census, George (age 72), Day Laborer, was the married head of household in Kosciusko, Attala, Mississippi. He was living with only his wife Harriet and his daughter Tennie.[5] No death record has been found.

George's name was inscribed on his headstone (as George W Adams) in Buffalo Cemetery, Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi, United States with a death date of 9 October 1921.[6]

Research Notes

In 1870, George was living as a single man with his parents in Madison County, Mississippi. He married in 1871, and by 1880, and for the rest of his life, he lived in the county immediately to the north of Madison County -- Attala County.

From 1880 until the 1920 US census, George and his family were classified as Black. But in the 1920 census, all the family members in his household, and George himself, were enumerated as "mulatto." This kind of variable classification reminds researchers of the sociopolitical nature of the censuses in the United States.
