Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Harriet (Rice) Adams is a part of US Black heritage.

Harriet was born in 1853. [1] She and her husband lived together in Attala County until he died in 1921. She passed away in mid-1940, but she was still alive in April 1940 when the census was done. In the 1940 census, Harret (age 86) was the widowed mother-in-law of Charlie Pullum in Kosciusko, Attala, Mississippi.[2] Harriet was mentioned on a memorial in Buffalo Cemetery, Kosciusko, Attala County, Mississippi, United States with a death date of 22 April 1940.[3]

Research Notes

Harriet's enslaved last name name of Rice is suggested by family researchers. There is some evidence to corroborate this hypothesis.[4]

Also, the 1900 census enumerated Harriet as having had nine children, four of which were living. This fact may reveal why so many of the family's children's names cannot be found from one census decade to the next. Some of Harriet's children may have been born and died in between the census counts.

  1. 1880 - listed children were Talula (b 1873), David (b 1875) and Kate (b 1877).
  2. 1900 - listed children were Nina (b June 1886) and Pinta (b July 1892)
  3. 1910 - listed children were Tennie (b 1893) and Emma (b 1880)
  4. 1940 - Harriet was shown living the daughter Ruth Pullum (b 1902)
