Leendert Akkerhuijs was born in 1837 in Voorburg, Holland. He was the son of Johannes Everardus Akkerhuijs and Magdalena Hulpusch.[1]
Leendert (age 26) married Margaretha Petronella van Abshoven (age 23), daughter of Teunis van Abshoven and Marijtje Hogervorst, on 18 October 1863 in Voorburg.[2]

Leendert moved to The Hague with his wife in November 1909 after retirement.[3] He died in The Hague in 1917.[4]
Career
Leendert Akkerhuijs J.Ezn was a Head Master (hoofdonerderwitjzer).[5] In 1866 he was Head Master in the village of Moerkapelle in South Holland. He became Head Master of Primary 1 and 2 Schools in Schoonhoven from 1867 until 1902.
Head Masters of this era carried out a large amount of administrative work including maintaining pupil records, personnel management, book and educational materials ordering and report writing. In Schoonhoven, South Holland, Head Masters reported directly to the Municipal government and thus also dealt extensively with the Mayor and Aldermen of the city.
Head Master Akkerhuijs introduced curriculum modernisation gradually in the 1860s and 1870s, while adhering to trusted methods. His book orders for the schools during this period shed light on his educational pedagogical approach.
The Netherlands 1878 Education Act mandated the introduction of the leerplan: a document outlining the intention, principles and organisation of the school, drawn up by the Head Master. This included a timetable, book list for every teacher and the dates of all school holidays, and formed the basis for operational educational practice until well into the twentieth century.
Extensive records of daily correspondence exist, which reveal the positions held by Leendert Akkerhuijs on mitigating habitual truancy through flexible attendance for older students, and seeking removal of unvaccinated students (in response to measles epidemics).
From 1881 headmasters in the Krimpenerwaard, under the leadership of Head Master Akkerhuijs, began to teach state-standard teacher training (Rijksnormaallessen), beginning in Bergambacht and from 1890 in Schoonhoven following the Netherlands 1889 Education Act. After his retirement as Head Master, Leendert remained Head of Teacher Training until 1909, aged 72 years.[6]
