John William Alvis was born about 1838 in Goochland County, Virginia.
In the 1850 census, John (age 12), was enumerated in Goochland, Goochland, Virginia, United States.[1]
In the 1860 census, John (age 22), Carpenter, was in Goochland, Virginia, United States.[2]
On 18 November 1869, John married Mary Cook (Robinson) Alvis in Goochland County, Virginia.[3]
