Edson "Pelé" Arantes do Nascimento was born on the 23th of October 1940, in Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil.[1][2] His parents were João "Dondinho" Barros do Nascimento[2] and Celeste Arantes.[1] Pelé was the eldest of their three children.[2] He was named after Thomas Edison, the famous American inventor.[2]
Pelé married Assíria Seixas Lemos on the 27th of March 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. [3] They had a more formal wedding on the 7th of May 1994 in Recife, Brazil.[4][5] It was said to be a "ceremony befitting royalty," and that Pelé cried at one point.[6][7] Assíria was thirty-four years old and Pelé fifty-three.[7]
He died on December 29, 2022. [8] He is mentioned on a memorial in Cemitério Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, Santos, Município de Santos, São Paulo.[9]
ɫNote that his father's name says "Ramos do Nascimento" on Wikipedia, but is "Barros do Nascimento" on Edson's baptismal record.
Pelé is regarded as one of the greatest football (soccer) players of all time. He was named "the greatest" by FIFA and he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century. In 1999 he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and was included in the Time's list of the 100 most important people in the 20th century.
Pelé began playing football for Santos in Brazil at age 15 and for the Brazil national team at 16. During his international career, he led Brazil to three FIFA World Cups in 1958, 1962, and 1970, and he is the only player to achieve such success. Pelé is the all-time leading goalscorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games. At club level, he is Santos' all-time top goalscorer with 643 goals in 659 games. Credited with connecting the phrase "The Beautiful Game" with football, Pelé's "electrifying play and penchant for spectacular goals" made him a star around the world and likely the most known individual in the world.
As a global icon for football, Pelé sparked a great upsurge in American soccer when he signed with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League in 1975. He played three seasons with the Cosmos, leading the Cosmos to an NASL championship in 1977 and being named as a first-team NASL all-star in each of his three seasons.
Pelé averaged an incredible almost a goal per game throughout his career. He was the "King of Football." When asked about his football prowess, Pelé indicated - “I was born to play football, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint.”
As he was on the pitch, Pelé has been a hero off the field. In 1994, Pelé was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. The most notable area of Pelé's life since football is his ambassadorial work. In 1992, he was appointed a UN ambassador for ecology and the environment. In Santos, the Pelé Museum presents the incredible trajectory of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, the King of Football. Pelé Day occurs in Santos, Brazil, on November 19 each year, to recognize the date of his 1,000th goal. Brazilan lawmakers enacted a law effective in 2001 nicknamed the “Pelé Law,” to address corruption in Brazilian football. Pelé created a foundation that teams with other organizations to benefit children, specifically in the areas of poverty and education.
