Joseph married Mary Elizabeth Dwyer, of Hokitika, on 14 May 1894.[2]
The couple had two boys and two girls, but he was left widowed when she died on 24 August 1915 at an age of 45.[3][4][5]
The death took place on Sunday morning at Westport of Mrs Joseph Armstrong, a native of Hokitika, and 45 years of age. The deceased is survived by a sorrowing hushand and a family of two sons and two daughters. Mrs Charles Nevin, of Reefton, a sister, proceeded to Westport on Sunday morning, but the deceased had passed away before she reached her.
