Joseph Armstrong was born on April 08, 1858 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, England. His parents were William Armstrong and Isabella Wailes. ^[1]

In 1861, according to the England census, he was 3 years old and living with his parents and 5 older siblings at their home in Henshaw, Northumberland. ^[2]

He married Margaret Nixon in April 1883 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland. ^[3] Together they had 6 children:

His first wife died in 1900 and he married Catherine Welch in 1901 in Houghton, Cumberland. ^[4]
