Julia was the surprise daughter of Issac Arnold and his second wife, Abbie Dishman. Born 8 years after her brother, Ralph, and 15 years after her youngest half-brother, she referred to her half-siblings as "Aunt" and "Uncle" rather than as her brothers and sisters. She was named after her maternal grandmother[1][2] and was a treasured child and very active in her youth.
In 1937 she married the dashing Rev. W.H. Clews son of Rev. W. Clews and brother of Rev. C.G. Clews, and became a minister's wife. It was a role she was more than well-suited for. She had one son, whom she treasured greatly, and 3 grandchildren who miss her.
She is buried next to her husband in the Arnold family plot at Pohick Cemetery in Lorton, Virginia. When visited in 2014, her stone was still without dates despite having been interred in 2009.[3]

↑ Personal recollection of Julia Calvert Arnold Clews and from her own notes: "I was named for my grandmother, Julia Calvert [Alexander] Potts Dishman, who was named for Julia Calvert [Stuart] (and at her suggestion) who was a bride's maid in Robert E. Lee's wedding.
"My great-grandmother, Ann [Moore] Potts & Julia Calvert [Stuart] were close friends and neighbors. When my grandmother was born she ran into the house to see the new baby & when Gr. Grandmother said they had not definitely decided upon a name, Julia Calvert said, 'O please name her for me, I have no namesake.'

I don't know why that just occurred to me - but I wanted to preserve that memory somewhere. This seemed a decent-enough place.
