James M. Aspden was born in 1823 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, a son of Henry Aspden and Ann Whitaker. He was a contractor, builder and stone mason in Camden, New Jersey. He was issued a patent for a filter in 1889. James married Susan Theresa Hood (1820-1899); they had a son, Charles H. Aspden born about 1854. James died July 22,1893 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Camden.

Found Dead in a Back Room

James Aspden, a prominent Prohibitionist, an a ardent worker for the Reformed Men’s Home, was found dead in a back room yesterday afternoon. He was about seventy-two years of age, and for the past 30 years was engaged in the business of contractor and builder. Coroner Jefferies decided that death was due to heart failure.
Did Not Die Alone
James Aspden, a well known builder and contractor of Camden, dropped dead in the bath room of his residence. The family of James Aspden, the builder, who died suddenly at his home on Chestnut street this week, say that Mr. Aspden was not found dead in the bath room, but was sitting down stairs and was suddenly taken Ill, and was assisted up stairs and went into the bath room, where he expired suddenly, in the presence of his family and Dr. Jarrett.
