John Atherton was born in about 1810 in Sutton, Lancashire. He was the son of Samuel Atherton.
On 4 Oct 1834, Samuel Atherton, John Atherton and William Tunstall announced the dissolution of their partnership as John Atherton and Company (brewers in Eccleston Lancashire).

The business was to be carried on as John Atherton and Brother by John Atherton and William Atherton.

John's father Samuel died in October 1836, aged 65; he was buried on 18 Oct 1836 at New Chapel in Baldwin Street, St Helens. His address was recorded as St Helens.
On 10 Nov 1836, John Atherton and William Atherton announced the dissolution of their partnership as John Atherton and Brother (ale and porter brewers at Thatto Heath in the township of Eccleston).[3] The date suggests this may have been a consequence of their father's death or probate.
By June 6th 1841, John was living in Thatto Heath, Eccleston, Lancashire with his sister Mary. Next door was their brother William.
John married Rachel Willcock on 7 Nov 1841 at St John's Church in Liverpool. John was a brewer. Their fathers were named as Samuel Atherton (plate glass maker) and John Willcock. The witnesses were William Foulkes and Anne Foulkes.
Their daughter Sarah Ann was born in 1843 in Eccleston.[4]
Their daughter Rachel was born in 1846 in Eccleston.[5]
Their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born in 1848 in Eccleston.[6]
By March 30th 1851, they were living in Eccleston with their children Sarah (7), Rachael (5) and Mary (2). Also in the household were John's unmarried brother Samuel and sister Mary, and his 3-year-old niece Ann Atherton. John was a time keeper, Samuel was a surgeon, and Mary was on an annuity, as was Ann.
By April 2nd 1871, John was a partner in a colliery.
By April 3rd 1881, they were living in Sutton; John was a clerk.
