Gladys (Atkinson) Jowett was born in Yorkshire, England.
Gladys was born on 22 November 1906 at the family home, 9 Melbourne Grove, Wyndham Street, Hull, Yorkshire, the daughter of Arthur Atkinson, a shipping office clerk and Minnie Rhodes.[1][2]
She was baptised three weeks later, on 12 December, at St James', Hull.[3]
By 1911 Gladys had a younger brother, George, and the family were still living in Melbourne Grove.[4][5]
By the time of the 1921 census the family had moved to 33 Bannister Street, Withernsea: Arthur's aunt Clara Blenkin was also living with the family. Gladys, now 14, was working as an office junior for the Central Warehousing Co.[6]
Gladys married Ronald Jowett in Withernsea Methodist Church on 4 October 1932.[1][7]
Gladys' brother George was best man whilst Ron's sisters Kath and Molly were bridesmaids and her young cousin Beryl Tether was trainbearer. The wedding was reported in the local newspaper, the Hull Daily Mail on 5 October.[8]
WITHERNSEA BRIDE
Mr R. P. Jowett—Miss G. W. Atkinson Ronald P. Jowett, of Helmsley, York, eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. Jowett, of Pocklington, and Miss Gladys W. Atkinson, of Bannister-street, Withernsea, only daughter of Mr and the late Mrs A. C. Atkinson, were married at the Methodist Church, Queen-street, Withernsea, yesterday. The ceremony was conducted the Rev A. Bayliss, assisted by the Rev S. 0. Tattersall. Mr G. C. Atkinson, brother of the bride, acted as best man. Mr W. Potter was at the organ and the service was fully choral. The bride has been a member of the church choir, the bridegroom being a former organist there. Given away by her father, the bride was attired in a parchment delmonte satin gown with introduced panels of lace. The fitted sleeve came to a point on the back of the hand and was finished with tiny satin buttons from wrist to elbow. Her parchment silk net headdress held a billowy tulle veil, which formed a long train. She carried a bouquet of cream tea roses. The two bridesmaids, the Misses K. and M. T. Jowett, sisters of the bridegroom, were attired in aquamarine blue satin-faced silk dresses. Dainty capes embroidered in sequins and pearls, lace cap headdresses, lace mittens, and shoes to match, completed their attire. Their bouquets were of pink carnations. Miss Beryl Tether, cousin of the bride, was the trainbearer. She wore a dainty gown of Chantilly lace and net in a primrose shade, with a cap headdress of lace, and shoes to tone. A reception was held in the Lecture Hall, Withernsea, and the couple left later for the honeymoon, which is being spent in North Wales. The bride travelled in a blue diagonal velour model coat lavishly trimmed with opossum, over a matching gown of georgette. Her shoes and hat were to tone. The dresses of the bride, bridesmaids, and trainbearer, and the going-away ensemble were by Elsie Battle, 83, Prospect-street, Hull.
Ron and Gladys had two children: Trevor and Chris.
In 1939, when the National Register was compiled, the family were living at 7 Springfield Road, Boroughbridge.[9]
She died on 28 April 1991[1][10] due to bronchopneumonia and multiple myeloma.
Probate for her estate was granted on 3 July 1991.[11]
