Biography

Mabel (Bailey) Pocock was born in Iowa.

Mabel Mae Bailey was born in 1890 in Eldon, Iowa to Charles A. Bailey and Mary Etta Skellenger. At some point in her early childhood, she was sent to live with cousins in Chicago, though there is no information about that except for a small newspaper notice that she and her cousin came to visit aunts and uncles. We have no census information for her before 1930.

Marriage

She married Fred A. Pocock in Yokohama, Japan in 1917 and went to live in Shanghai with him while he was there on business. She gave birth to my father, Agustin James Pocock, while in Shanghai, on 10 Nov 1922. They moved back to the US shortly thereafter.

She passed away in 1981 outside Philadelphia in a nursing home.[1]

Brick wall

Information about her youth is missing. I cannot find any census records for her before 1917. I think she was sent to live with relatives in Chicago where she did wind up.

According to several newspaper accounts, my grandmother fell in love and became engaged to a well known pitcher for the Chicago White Sox named "Death Valley" Jim Scott. She traveled with him to San Fransisco and Hawaii. He wrote her several love letters indicating his promise of marriage upon their return to the mainland. Sadly, he jilted her, whereby she filed a civil suit against him for $25000.00. She never wanted the money, just to teach him a lesson.

There are no records of my grandmothers birth as they were destroyed. There is a blurb in an Iowa newspaper that names her visiting her aunts and uncles in Aug. 1908 from Chicago, she would have been 18. And one reference, in an article about her lawsuit, that says she was living with her brother in Chicago in 1915.
