Biography

John Baldwin, Sr., son of Francis Baldwin and Cecily Coebourne; was born approx. 1697 in Chester County, Pa. He died in 1745. He married 1st, Elizabeth Lewis in approx 1719, she died in 1725. He married 2nd, Sarah Cloud, in 1725/6, she died in 1727 shortly after the birth of their first child.

John married a third wife, sister of Sarah, Hannah (Cloud) Prew. Her husband Caleb Prew died in 1726, leaving her with four daughters; Susannah, Sarah, Mary, and Betty Prew. Hannah died in 1735.

Will of John Baldwin

John Baldwin died on his plantation in early 1745.

His will dated 18 Nov 1744 was proved March 21, 1745 (N.C. Co., Misc. 2:12). It was witnessed by Samuel Greave and John Baldwin. His wife Hannah Baldwin died in 1735[1]

:Oldest son Francis, to receive my messuage and plantation & tract of land where I now live situated in Christiana Hundred...containing one hundred and fifty five acres or thereabouts together with my large bible. "Francis to deal with the two younger children, to bring up daughter Hannah until she reaches 18, and to give son William 1 years schooling, apprentice to a trade until he reaches 21 and then pay him L50 out of the real estate money.

Two other sons (John and William?) to have said premises if Francis dies without issue and has not sold it.
Daughter Elizabeth, wife of James Huklin, 1 shilling and to James Huklin, 1 shilling, but L15 to be kept by executors to be spent for the benefit of Elizabeth, and if she should die, to be divided among surviving daughters.
Daughter Mary, wife of Nicholas Pyle, and her husband, monetary amount
Daughter Sarah, wife of John Pyle, and her husband monetary amount
Daughter Hannah , monetary amount, or if she dies before reaching 18, to surviving daughters.
Son John monetary amount out of residue, and remainder of personal estate.

Eldest son Francis, sole executor.

Research Notes

Another John Baldwin was born in Pennsylvania in 1697, died in 1728. Hewas a Quaker, who married Hannah Johnson. She then married Joseph Cloud after 1728. These two men are cousins and have become conflated.

In the Baldwin Genealogy from 1500-1881, the author Charles Candee Baldwin. gives John Baldwin a daughter Mary, who married Thomas Harlow in 1753. He CORRECTS Page 737 on page 1257 of the Supplement; Mary; no such child. she was dau. of john Baldwin, son of William Baldwin, with reference to pg 763 of the original Baldwin genealogy from 1500-1881.

John Baldwin, born in 1697 to John Baldwin and Catherine Carter; m. in 1719 Hannah Johnson; and had 2 sons; John and Joshua; both of which were mentioned in their grandfathers will in 1732.
