The following biographical sketch of Joseph Ballard was taken from info in Hazzard's History, Henry Co., Indiana:
Joseph Ballard, a farmer and stock-raiser, was born November 8, 1842, in Franklin Twp., Henry Co., Indiana, a son of Moman and Elizabeth (Paul) Ballard. Joseph received a medium education in the common schools, and lived with his father until manhood. On August 11, 1862, he enlisted in Company I, of the 69th Indiana Infantry, during the Civil War. His regiment was sent to Kentucky, after the Battle of Richmond, where he was taken ill and became unable to perform the duties required of him. He was transferred to the Invalid Corps, and remained there until his discharge on October 31, 1863.
After returning home, Joseph remained with his father until his marriage and then moved to Dudley Twp., Henry Co., IN, where he had a farm of 80 acres. He married, on March 3, 1864, to Nancy Ann Shidler, the daughter of Samuel Shidler. Joseph and Nancy had a family of three children: Minnie A. (Marcellus Symons, Cassius C. Jenkins); Angie Viola (Martin Haskett); and William M. (Meriam Emily Gauker).
Joseph died on February 4, 1921 in Dudley, Indiana at the age of 78. [4] Joseph was buried in Lewisville, Henry County, Indiana. [5]

Note: Find A Grave. citing obituary published Feb. 8, 1921 in the New Castle Daily Courier, New Castle, Indiana: (Joseph Ballard, an aged citizen, born and lived in Dudley township, Henry county, IN, all his life, died at the home of his son, Will Ballard, Jr., on February 4. Funeral was Sunday afternoon, February 6, in the Christian Church in Straughn, conducted by Rev. Tranbarger, a minister in Liberal U. B. Church of which he was a member. His wife preceded him in death some six or more years ago. He was afflicted with paralysis several years ago. The past two years or more he was worse and a great care by his son and wife, who cheerfully cared for him. He was laid to rest by the side of his wife in the Lewisville Cemetery.
