George Bankes is Notable.

George was born in 1788, the third son of Henry Bankes, Esq., of Kingston Hall, Dorset.

He studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, matriculating Lent, 1806. George received his LL.B. in 1812; (Civil Law Classes, 1st Class, 1815-16), was a Fellow, 1814-22, and admitted at Lincoln's Inn, May 22, 1810. He was called to the bar in 1813 and then incorporated at the Inner Temple, Feb. 20, 1815.

He spent his life in public office, serving in a number of different positions, including:

  • A Commissioner of Bankruptcy, 1822.
  • Cursitor Baron of the Exchequer, 1824-56.
  • Chief Secretary of the Board of Control, 1829.
  • Junior Lord of the Treasury, 1830.
  • Judge Advocate-General, 1852.
  • P.C., 1852.
  • M.P. for Corfe Castle, 1816-23 and 1826-32; for Dorset, 1841-56.
  • Recorder of Weymouth, 1823.
  • Chairman of the Dorset Quarter Sessions, c. 1836-56.
  • Mayor of Corfe Castle, 1838, 1840 and 1847.

George even authored a book, "The Story of Corfe Castle and Brave Dame Mary."

He passed away in 1856 and was buried at Studland, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset.
