David Banta was born in Bergen, New Jersey in 1751 to Jan (John) and Trintie Demarest Banta. He was a member of the Dutch colony established in Conewago, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
At Conewago David married Femmetie (Phoebe) Brouwer, with whom he had two children, Johannis and Marija (Maria).
Johannis died young, reportedly drowning at the age of 2, but Maria lived to adulthood, marrying Jacob Albert Banta, a distant cousin. (A 3rd cousin once removed, they descend from different sons of immigrant Epke Jacobse [Banta])
David was killed by Indians prior to 1785, and his widow & daughter went on to Kentucky with those who colonized Mercer County. Phoebe would marry again, to Cornelius Demaree.
Is "A Frisian Family" wrong about Phoebe's second marriage? The 1791 will of Daniel Brouwer includes the statment, "To my daughter Phoebe Demaree, wife of Cornelius Demaree, one eighth part to her and her heirs forever."[1]
