Robert Banting was a son of James Banting and Ann Thompson,[1]Irish immigrants who had settled in Simcoe County, Ontario.[2][3] In 1861 Robert and his sister Susan lived with, and probably worked for, the Woolcock family on their farm in Tecumseth Township, Simcoe County.[4] Four years later Robert joined the local militia[5] and by 1871 he and his older brother Charles were farming together in Tecumseth.[6]
On April 4, 1877, he married Mary Jane Cruthers. The witnesses were John Culbert of Essa Township and Mary Jane's brother Samuel Cruthers[7] The Bantings had two children, William and Eva, before Mary Jane's death of tuberculosis in 1885, three months after their daughter's birth. William remained with Robert while Eva was raised by Mary Jane's mother in her home nearby.
In the fall of 1886, Robert married Ann Jane Douglas.[8] In 1891 they lived with William on the farm in Tecumseth. Mary Douglas, one of Ann's sisters, is also recorded on the census as a member of their household.[9] In 1911 another Douglas sister, Margaret, also lived with the Bantings. By this time William had moved to British Columbia, where he ran a general store.[10]
Robert died of pneumonia and heart failure on December 9, 1915, in Tecumseth.[11] He was buried at Beeton United Cemetery, Beeton, Ontario.[12]
