Thomas, son and heir of William Bardolf, Knight, and Anges Poynings, was born at Birling, Sussex 22 Dec. 1369.[1]
He married before 8 July 1382 Amice (or Avice) Cromwell, daughter of Ralph de Cromwell, 1st Lord Cromwell, by Maud, daughter of John de Bernake. They had two daughters, Anne and Joan.[2]
In 1405 Sir Thomas joined the Earl of Northumberland in his rebellion against King Henry IV, and fled with the earl to Scotland. He was declared by Parliament to be a traitor 4 Dec. 1406 and his lands forfeited.[1]
His honours and lands were forfeited to the Crown by attainder. [3]
"The estates were divided between Thomas Beaufort, 1st Duke of Exeter (the king's half-brother), Sir George de Dunbar, Knight, and the Queen; but the latter's proportion, upon the petition of Sir William Clifford, knt. and his wife, Anne, and Sir William Phelip and his wife, Joan, to the king, was granted in reversion, after the Queen's decease, to those husband's of the attainted nobleman."[3]
Sir Thomas Bardolf, 5th Lord Bardolf, returned to England and was defeated at Bramham Moor, Yorkshire 19 Feb. 1407/8. He died of his wounds a few hours later. His remains were quartered, and his head placed on one of the gates of Lincoln. The king ordered his head and quarters be given to his widow, Amice, for burial 13 April 1408.[1]
