William was born about 1849. He was the son of Joseph Barnett. He passed away in 1909. [1]
In 1860, William J, 18, was living in Hardin, KY with his parents Joseph D, 48, and Martha A, 42. Also in the household were Mary T, 16, Tabitha, 14, Joseph D, 9, Charity C, 6, and Jesse B, 5. William was born in KY. [2]
In 1870, William J, 28, was living in Hernando, Florida with his wife, Virginia, 28. Also in the household were Jesse, 7 mo, and a black nurse named Eliza Barnett. William was a lawyer. He had real estate of $300 and personal estate of $400. [3]
In 1880, W.J, 38, was living in Hernando, Florida, with his wife, Virginia, 38. Also in the household were Hope M, 8, and Charles, 1. W.J. was a lawyer. [4]
In 1900, W.J, Mar 1849, was living in Port Tampa, Hillsborough, Florida with his wife, Virginia, 50. Also in the household were Hope M, 27, Chas, 21, Chas’’s wife, Allie, 22, and their son, C.W, 1, and a boarder, Emma Garrison, 19. W.J. and Virginia had been married 34 yrs. She had given birth to 10 children, but only 2 still alive. Chas and Allie had been married 3 yrs and Allie had given birth to 1 child. W.J. was an attorney, Chas was employed as a clerk in a RR Office, and Allie was a merchant. [5]
William J. Barnett was buried in Hope Hill Cemetery, Hernando, Florida. There’s no photo of the tombstone but the dates are 1842-24 Jan 1909. On his findagrave site, there is a biographical article which was written by Roger Landers in St Petersburg Times 2007: William J. Barnett was born in KY in 1842. He fought in Helm’s Brigade, Second KY Cavalry until captured in 1862. He spent time at Camp Chase, OH where he became ill. After a prisoner exchange, he went to FL and served in the “Cow Cavalry”. He married Virginia Hope on 4 Jul 1865. He became an attorney in Aug 1869. He served as assistant state attorney for the 6th District, justice of the peace and a notary public. He was the first mayor of Brooksville. According to a Tampa newspaper Brooksville has but one lawyer in full practice, Col W.J. Barnett. He died of cancer 24 Jan 1909 and was buried in the Hope family cemetery.[1]
