Barrett and Miss Amanda F. Congdon, both of Como." The Dixon Telegraph, Dixon, Illinois, Thursday, September 10, 1874, page 1: "John W Barrett, one mile east of Compton, in this county, lost thirty dollars by thieves who entered his house while the family was absent." The Sterling Gazette, Sterling, Illinois, Saturday, December 28, 1877, page 2: "John Barrett finished digging his potatoes Dec 20th and he says they were not hurt a particle." The Dixon Sun, Dixon, Lee County, Illinois, April 26, 1888, page unknown: "Mr J W Barrett, near Compton, had a number of cattle die recently and feared that pluro pneumonia had developed in his herd. Skilled veterinary examination, however, proved that the fatality was caused by impurity in the feed. Some of the fodder cut by Mr Barrett last summer and last winter fed to his cattle, was bound with a self-binder, and under the tight bands was not properly cured, but became musty or moldy and smut or ergot collected there, causing the disease so fatal to the animals. Farmers will do well to make a note of this." Sterling Gazette, page 6, Rock Falls Daily Gazette Section, Rock Fall, Illinois, Tuesday, April 11, 1916: "Death of J.W. Barrett - Pioneer Resident Passed Away - at 10:45 O'clock Last Night." "John W. Barrett, a pioneer resident of this vicinity, passed away at 10:45 o'clock last night at his home on the Prophetstown road. Death was due to a complication of diseases, which has confined him to his bed for the past five or six weeks. He leaves to mourn his death one son, John, and a host of friends. "The funeral services will be held at the late home Thursday afternoon a 2 o'clock. Rev J.B. Johnston, pastor of the Congregational Church will officiate. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery. "A complete obituary will be published later."
Sterling Gazette, page 6, Rock Falls Daily Gazette Section,Rock Falls, Illinois, Wednesday, April 12, 1916. "Death of J.W. Barrett - Obituary of a Pioneer of Whiteside County - Came to Como in 1849. John W. Barrett was born in Waterford, Ohio, Dec 8, 1838, and passed from this life April 10, 1916. He had been in poor health for several years from rheumatism. He was a son of Henry Barrett, one of the pioneer settlers of Whiteside county. He came with his parents from Ohio in the year 1849, and lived in Como until 1890, when he moved to Rock Falls and bought a home, residing there since. "On April 6, 1870, he was united in marriage to Amanda F. Congdon, eldest daughter of Johnathan Congdon, another pioneer settler of Como, from Rhode Island. His wife died seven years ago. To this happy union one son was born, Johnathan J, who has always made his home with his father. "Besides his son and wife he is survived by three brothers and two sisters, William and Frank Barrett, of Morrison, Joseph, of Kansas City, Kans., Mrs. Angeline Rich, of Carroll, Ia, Mrs. Pantha H Schick, of Rock Falls. "The funeral will be held at his late home on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock. Rev. J.B. Johnston will conduct the services. Burial will be in the Rock Falls cemetery beside his wife. Six nephews will act as pall bearers."
Sterling Gazette, page 6, Rock Falls Daily Gazette Section, Rock Falls, Illinois, Friday, April 14, 1916: "Funeral Service Over the Remains of John Barrett Was Held Thursday Afternoon - "The funeral service over the remains of John Barrett was held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at his late home on the Prophetstown road. Rev. J.B. Johnston, pastor of the Congregational Church officiated. During the services Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Daggett sang,`When the Mist Has Rolled Away' and `Savior Like a Shepard Leadeth'. "The house was filled with many relatives and friends and the floral tributes were beautiful. Interment was the I.O.O.F. cemetery. "The pall bearers were Carl, Harvey, Theodore and Percy Schick, James Sensenbaugh and Harvey Barrett. "The following relatives from out of town were present, Joseph Barrett of Kansas City, Kans., William and Frank Barrett, of Morrison, brothers of the deceased Harvey Barrett and Mrs. Roy Puckett of Morrison."
