Philander married Elizabeth Ann Walker 28 June 1882 in Merrickville, Ontario. At the time of his marriage Philander was a dry goods clerk in the town of Merrickville.[2] By 1893 he had become a merchant in Jasper, Ontario. Some time before 1901 the couple moved their family to Shoal Lake, Manitoba, where the census notes Philander's occupation as clerk. By 1911 he had become a Postmaster in Dauphine, Manitoba.[3] The couple had 5 daughters.[4]
