"The Millhouse"
Albin and his twin brother, Albert, were born in Nelson, New Hampshire to Asa Beard and his wife, Lucy (Goodnow) Beard.[1] They were the second and third of five children born into this prominent family. By 1814 his father had completed building a home for his growing family while also founding The Nelson Cotton and Woolen Company in about 1815.[2] Here Albin and his family lived..
His father, Asa, was a schoolteacher in Nelson's schools teaching accepted customs of conduct and "right" living in a civil society. Therefore, the boys and their siblings arrived at adulthood as responsible, civic-minded people.
Albin studied the printer's trade, becoming first an apprentice in the offices of the Keene Sentinel, in Keene, New Hampshire, and then after moving to the Boston area, as a journeyman printer for the Columbian Sentinel of Boston, Massachusetts. He also wrote articles he would send to his brother's newspaper in Nashua, New Hampshire.[3] It was here that he met Miss Julia Ann Crocker. They were married on 13 May 1832 in Boston, Massachusetts, and the couple continued to reside in the Boston area.[4][5] An announcement of their marriage was announced in the local paper.[6]
Tragically the couple would mourn the death from whooping cough of their firstborn child, Alfred, in April of 1833. He was almost three months old.[7] Within three years, Julia Amanda, their first daughter, was born there in Boston.
The young family moved to Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1836 where Albin associated himself working at his brother's newspaper, The Telegraph, editing and publishing the paper.[3]
Was appointed Postmaster of Nashua, New Hampshire[8]
Mayor of Nashua, New Hampshire from 1858-1859 [9] [10]
