Artemisia Beman (or Beaman - both spellings were used by contemporaries) was the youngest of 3 daughters of Alvah Beman / Beaman and Sarah Elizabeth "Betsy" (Burtts) Beman. She was born in Livonia, upstate New York, March 19, 1819. Her entire family converted to the fledgling Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS / Mormon) in New York in the early 1830s. She most-likely met her future husband Erastus Snow at one of the early Mormon meetings in upstate New York as he did significant LDS Church missionary work there at that time. Artemisia married Elder Snow, December 13, 1838, at the Mormon-created town of "Far West" in Caldwell County, Missouri.
A devout LDS believer, she followed him for the rest of her life, including participating in missions to Salem, Massachusetts, and making the historic Mormon trek to the Great Salt Lake Valley, Utah in 1848. They had 11 children together:
Artemisia's older sister, Louisa, born in Livonia, New York in 1815, was LDS founding Prophet Joseph Smith Jr.'s first "plural wife" when she married him on April 15, 1841, in Nauvoo, Illinois. When Joseph was murdered in July 1844 by an anti-polygamist mob, she was taken in by future LDS President, Apostle Brigham Young, whom she married September 16, 1844. The 3rd Beman sister, Mary Adeline, had earlier married Joseph Bates Noble, Joseph Smith's personal body-guard and an LDS Bishop and Elder, in 1834 in Livonia, New York.
These three families (Snow, Young & Noble) were very close and together they shaped modern LDS Church history and that of Utah Territory, which became a state in 1896.
Artemisia Beman Snow died at the Snow family compound in Saint George, Utah, on December 21, 1882. She was 63 years old. She is buried in the Saint George City Cemetery.
