According to his Eastern Cherokee application, Obediah was born in the Cherokee Nation in January, 1841. He was the son of Martin Benge, a white man, and Eliza Lowrey, a Cherokee. Martin appears with his parents and siblings on the 1851 Drennan Roll living in the Skin Bayou district, Cherokee Nation. [1] He married Margaret Blair about 1860. They were the parents of ten children, Norma, Sarah, Charles, Eliza, John, Ellen, Jane, Andrew, [2] George, and Obediah, Jr. [3] Margaret died in 1898 and Obediah married Etta Asbill, a white woman, in February, 1899. [4]. They were the parents of four children, Henry (died in infancy), Ridge Otto, Drewie, and Mary. [5] Obediah died January 24, 1918 and is buried in the Benge family cemetery, Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. [6]
