Biography

Birth and Adoption

Edgar Francis Viles was the adopted son of Daniel Francis Viles and Susan C. Mossman. He was the illegitimate son of Helena Berg, a Swedish immigrant servant working in south Boston. Helena said the boy's father was John Carter, and his birth name was August Bernard Carter Berg. He was adopted by the Viles in 1877.[1]

Edgar attended Brown University, Class of 1896, however he did not graduate, as he wanted to work in the theater. He served in the Spanish-American War. He was a member of the Monitor Lodge, AF&AM, and the Waltham Country Club, and was the President of the Waltham Screw Company.

In 1880. Daniel F. Viles, a 37 year old insurance agent b. Massachusetts, lived with his wife, Susie C., 30 b. Maine, and son Edgar F., 4yo b. Massachusetts. Sister-in-law Lulu Mossman, 18yo b. Massachusetts, lived with the family. Danile's parents were born in Massachusetts, and Susie's were born in Maine.[2]

1910 Waltham Ward 2, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States

In 1910, Edgar F. Viles, 33years old b. MA, was a manager at Waltham Screw Co.. He lived in a place he rented with his wife of five years, Marcia L., 29yo b. MA. This is the first marriage for both, and the couple has had no children. Their parents were all born in Massachusetts. [3]

1920 Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States

In 1920, Edgar F. Viles, a 42yo, worked as a manager at Waltham Screw Co. He lived in a home he owned on Lexington Road with his wife, Marcia L., 38yo, and three children: Sheldon, 9yo; Daniel F., 7yo; and Catherine, 5yo. Mother-in-law Harriet A. Sheldon, a 77yo widow, lived with the family. All were born in Massachusetts, as were their parents except for Edgar's mother, who was born in Maine. A servant, Jeanette E. Ross, 38yo b. CANADA, also lived with the family. [4]

1930 Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States

In 1930, Edgar F. Viles, 53yo, lived in a home he owned on Lexington Road with his wife Marcia L., 48yo, and four children: Sheldon, 19; Daniel, 17; Catherine, 15; and Lyman L., 9. All were born in Massachusetts, as were their parents. Edgar works as a treasurer in cotton manufacturing. He was 29yo and Marcia was 24yo when they were first married. Two servants, Ellen C. and Sylvia Freeman, 21 and 18yo respectively, b. Michigan, lived with the family. Edgar's home is worth $30,000.[5]

Death and Burial

Edgar is buried at the Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA.[6]
