"Daniel [Viles], s. Nathan and Francis, [was born] Jan. 4, 1843" at Waltham, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[1]
During the American Civil War, Daniel Francis Viles served in the 2nd Independent Battery MA Volunteer Light Artillery, being mustered in 4 January 1864 as a private and mustered out 11 Aug 1865 at at Galloup's Island, Boston, MA. Red River campaign with Banks, no action.[2]
Daniel Francis Viles married Susan C. Mossman on 17 April 1872 at Waltham (Watertown), Middlesex, MA.[3] The records shows her name as Susie C. Howard. The ceremony was performed by James L. Bixby of 1st Parish, Watertown. The records show that Susie was born in Thomaston, ME, daughter of Gardner and Emeline. This was Susie's 2nd marriage.
Another record shows a marriage between Daniel F. Viles and Susie C, Viles as occurring on 12 Oct 1889. Susie is shown as Susie C. Viles, with Mosman written below. Daniel is shown as 46 years old and Susie was 40. The ceremony was performed by Thomas Cruley (sp), Justice of the Peace, Waltham. This was the 2nd marriage for both.[4]
In 1877, Daniel and his wife Susie adopted August Bernard Carter Berg and named him Edgar Francis Viles. August was the illegitimate son of Helena Berg, a Swedish immigrant servant working in south Boston.[5]
In 1880. Daniel F. Viles, a 37 year old insurance agent b. Massachusetts, lived in Waltham, Middlesex, Massachusetts, with his wife, Susie C., 30 b. Maine, and son Edgar F., 4yo b. Massachusetts. Sister-in-law Lulu Mossman, 18yo b. Massachusetts, lived with the family. Daniel's parents were born in Massachusetts, and Susie's were born in Maine.[6]
In 1900, Daniel F. Viles, a 57yo insurance agent b. Jan 1843 MA, was living in Waltham with his wife Susie C., 49yo b. June 1850 ME, and son Edward F., a 23yo insurance agent b. May 1877 MA. Daniel says he has been married for 20 years, and Susie says she has been married for 26 years and has had one child, who is still living.[7]
During his life, Daniel worked as an Insurance agent; President, Waltham Screw Co., and the Town Clerk for Waltham.
Daniel died on 24 Dec 1919, at Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[8][9] and was buried on 26 Dec 1919, at Mt. Feake Cemetery in Waltham. Mt. Feake Cemetery records, Lot 2012, show Daniel's age at death as 76yr, 11m, 20d.[10][3][1]
