Elliott and John Berry mustered into the Civil War as Privates with the 103rd Infantry of Fulton county, Illinois. John joined on 2 August 1862. Elliott joined 2 days later on 4 August 1862. "THE 103d INFANTRY was organized in August 62 and mustered Oct 2 The 103d was exclusively a Fulton regiment having been raised entirely in county The regiment received orders Oct to move to Cairo and thence to Jackson and Bolivar where It was assigned Nov 2 to First Brigade Fourth Division Thirteenth Corps The regiment was in sundry marches and reconnaissances and Bolivar during November December 1862. On the 9th of November engaged the enemy near Coldwater Miss him killing 15 and capturing 70 prisoners On the 28th of November went on to Tallahassee river where a strong force of the enemy and them from their position On the 30th December went into winter quarters at Jackson The 103d took part in the battle of llesaca where they sustained quite a heavy loss; among the brave men who fell there was the gallant Col Willard A Dickerman who gave up his life May 28 61 The regiment was mustered out June 21 65 at Louisville Ky and proceeded to Chicago where June 24 65 it received final payment and discharge." -- History of Fulton county, Illinois.
